A Week in the Life of a Pre-Paid Legal Independent Associate
By Carl Coffin

Pre-paid legal services Inc. is a NYSE company. The company is located in Ada, OK. When I decided to join prepaid legal I was attracted to the opportunity to build my business from home. I was told this business could be built spending 5-10 hrs. a week. Now, I wasn't ignorant. I knew that building any business would require a lot of my time and money to build.

I was a serious associate who was also coachable. I listened to my sponsors and tried to do what it was that they said would make me serious money. I was introduced to the normal marketing approaches like building a list of my warm market, handing out two - ten DVD's a day, networking in my community, etc.

From the beginning my sponsors knew I was also working a full time job. I would have to work on my prepaid legal business part time until I could transition to full time. I 'm now going to break down a week with Pre-paid legal and show you how much of my time was taken up by supporting activity's vs.

I would spend a total of 7 1/2 hours a week in supporting activities. I would try to spend 9- 10 hrs. a week marketing. I was doing all this because I was trying to be coachable. My part time business was consuming close to 20 hrs. a week and with two kids, a wife and other responsibilities it was tough. This was every week, not to mention I wasn't making hardly any money using these out of date marketing techniques. I was spending money on event after event, even flying to larger events. I was encouraged to go to all the events.

I was definitely not building a work at home business. All I ever wanted was a business that I could build from home while at the same time being close to my family. At the conclusion of my first year with prepaid, I made $700.00 in commissions and I spent $6,000.00 on events and live trainings, and daily operational costs. (Not too bright, I know). At the end of year 2 I made $1,750 in commissions and spent at least another 5-7,000 on events, trainings, and operational costs.

I only wish I knew now what I didn't know back then.

My life had evolved into a prepaid legal lifestyle. My wife and I wanted the freedom to work from home, not kill ourselves planning our lives around pre paid legal.

It wasn't until I quit building my prepaid legal business and learning how to market online that my business changed. I now have more time freedom and less stress.
